Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada History


April 15, 1932
 

First Girl Scout troop in So. Nevada formed in Boulder City. Twenty-two girls joined initially; membership doubled in four months.

1942
 

Boulder City Council formed by the regional director from Salt Lake City, Utah. Shirley Berger was commissioner. The five lone troops then functioning, became the first troops to come under the official sponsorship of an official council; 114 girls registered.

1943
 

Henderson Council formed.

1944
 

Las Vegas Council formed.

1945
 

Myra Dodge first paid Executive Director; Roberta Hudlow- Assistant Executive Director.

1947
 

First Las Vegas training course offered to aid leaders.

1950
 

First cookie sale.

Articles of incorporation were drawn up to form Frontier Area Girl Scout Council which served the Clark County area.

1953
 

First adult Girl Scout conference held in Boulder City.

1954
 

Annual reports show 2500 girls and adults registered in the council.

Camp Foxtail went into operation.

1957
 

Headquarters moved to Las Vegas.

Nye, Esmeralda and Lincoln counties in Nevada, and Needles, California added to council jurisdiction.

1961
 

Dedication of Girl Scout service center located at 2530 Stewart Avenue.

Frontier Girl Scout Council served approximately 6,000 girls and 1,000 adults- emphasis on extending membership to all girls.

Senior Girl Scouts served on the Board of Directors for the first time.

Mazie Jones administration building was dedicated at Camp Foxtail.

Calico Basin dedicated and time capsule buried.

1986
 

White Pine County added to council jurisdiction- include Echoing Pines camp.

First drop-in center opened in Herbert Gerson Community.

Doolittle Drop-In center opened.

1989
 

Calico opened for troop/group use.

1990
 

Friendship Drop-In center opened in the Meadows Village area.

1991
 

First Contemporary Issues seminar held at UNLV- You Can Make a Difference.

1992
 

80-60-40 Anniversary celebration.

First visit from GSUSA President LaRae Orullian.

Second Contemporary Issues seminar held at UNLV- Together Making a Difference.

Council offers "My Baby and Me" to assist pregnant teens.

In-School programs are launched.

Lowden Drop-In center opened.

Kid's Cafe opened in conjunction with Harrah's.

Rivera and Miller Plaza Drop-In centers opened.

85th Anniversary celebration.

Purchase of Needles Girl Scout House.

Reopening of Friendship Drop-In center.

5% membership increase.

Expanded council shop opens.

1998
 

Council web page launched; strategic plan for 2000-2005 developed.

First annual golf tournament held.

City closed Gerson Housing; Drop-In center relocated to Sherman Gardens.

Sixteen girls earned Gold Awards; 23 girls earned Silver Awards.

Second community office opens in Ely, Nevada.

14% membership increase!

50th anniversary celebration for Camp Foxtail.

GSUSA National Executive Director Marty Evans visits.

Regional training conference hosted 150 participants from 25 GS councils.

Regional development conference hosted 50 participants from 10 GS councils.

Hispanic Action Committee formed.

March 15- City of Las Vegas donates land for the future site of the Service Center.

Regional Membership Summit hosted at the Stardust.

January 19- Doors close for the last time to the public at 2530 Stewart Avenue.

January 31- Service Center closed.

February 26- Open the new office at 2941 Harris Avenue.

  July- Notification of Donald W. Reynolds Foundation grant.

2003

  March 12- Groundbreaking Ceremony for new facility.

2004

  April 16- Opened the doors to the Donald W. Reynolds Girl Scout Training and Service Center.

June 12- Grand Opening ceremony and Celebration of the new service center.

Council Performance Assessment conducted

Camp Quest launched to raise campership funds

Hosted “Bright Lights, Starry Nights” destination with 44 girls from across the country participating

18 girls travel to Savannah to visit Birthplace of Girl Scouting

First Trunk or Treat and Last Wet ‘n Wild event held

10th annual cookie carnival held

19 Gold Award recipients

Received supplemental art grant from Reynolds Foundation received to add art to the service center

Girl Scout troops participate in Las Vegas Centennial celebrations

Camp Foxtail Damaged by Snowstorm

New Platform tents rebuilt through donations of labor from Del Webb and various construction unions.
Received donation of $25,000 from Reynolds Foundation to assist in camp rebuilding.
