Camp Foxtail
Camp
Foxtail was established in 1949, and is now a year-round
camping facility operated under a special use permit with
the U.S. Forest Service by Girl Scouts of Frontier Council.
It is located in the Toiyabe National Forest high above Las
Vegas, Nevada, in the cool Spring Mountain Range, and offers
a wide variety of general and specialized programs. It is
for use by Girl Scout troops/groups and other non-profit
organizations. Girls and adults of all ages, spend their
days among the abundance of Aspen, Ponderosa, and Foxtail
Pine. Resident Camp is
held here each summer.
Camp Foxtail has been accredited by the American
Camping Association for over 25 years, with the last
accreditation evaluation conducted in 2002. ACA is an organization
that accredits resident and day camps. To be considered
an accredited camp, a site must meet 178 different standards
and pass an intense site evaluation every three years.
A large portion of the standards required are specific
to the facility itself and include evaluation of safety
inspections and maintenance for building, structures, grounds,
and sanitation conditions. Camp Foxtail is located in Lee
Canyon and is subject to intense snowfall each year. Every
year, inspection and repairs are made prior to conducting
the summer resident camp program.
The temperature at camp is cool at night and early morning,
but can get to 85 degrees during the day in the summer months.
Base camp is at 8500' with the highest unit at 9000'. Often
you will be able to see snow above camp, and if you are adventurous,
you can hike to it and have a snowball fight in the middle
of summer!
Programs at Camp Foxtail include Resident
Camp, and day activities such as hikes, nature study,
crafts, overnights, campfire singing and a variety of special
activities.
