Voice of Democracy Scholarship Program - new

The Voice of Democracy (VOD) Scholarship Program is an audio-essay contest for high school students that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships. The program is designed to foster patriotism by allowing students the opportunity to voice their opinion in a 3-5 minute essay based on an annual theme. The first-place winner, who competes with all the first-place VFW Department winners, receives a $30,000 scholarship that is paid directly to the recipient's American university, college, or vocational/technica l school. Besides competing for the top scholarship prize, as well as other national scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $16,000, each Department's first-place winner will receive an all-expense- paid trip to Washington, D.C.

The Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting- updated

The Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting offers two scholarships. The recipient for first place will receive $1,000 and the runner up will receive $500 upon acceptance to a four year accredited college or university. The candidates are evaluated on their involvement in their church, school, community, scholastic achievements, and Scouting.
Eligibility requirements:
  • Be a registered active member of Girl Scouts
  • Have earned the Girl Scout Gold Award.
  • Be an active member of an Eastern Orthodox Church and must have received the Alpha Omega Religious Scout Award.
  • Have demonstrated practical citizenship in their church, school, Scouting unit, and community.
  • Be enrolled in an accredited high school, and in their final year.
  • Submit four letters of recommendation with the application: one letter from leaders of each of the following groups: religious institution, school, community leader, and head of Scouting unit.

The Russian Children’s Welfare Society, Inc, has funded an additional scholarship for $1,000 for a Girl Scout who is of Russian descent and meets the above eligibility requirements.

The Eastern Orthodox Scouting Scholarship Committee will award the three national scholarships to the recipients who best meet the qualifications above. Applications can be obtained from E.O.C.S. Chairman and they must be submitted by May 1st of each year.

Girl Scout Achievement Award-updated

AWARD: $1,000 Scholarship and a trip to the ALA National Convention in Phoenix, Arizona (August 2008)

Applicant Requirements:

  • Must have earned the Girl Scout Gold award and have at least Junior standing in High School.
  • Must be actively involved in a religious institution and must have received the appropriate religious emblem at the Cadette or Senior Scout level.
  • Must have demonstrated practical citizenship in the religious institution, school, Girl Scouting, and community.
  • Must submit at least one letter of recommendation with application from an individual representing one of the following: your church, school, community, or Girl Scout troop.
  • Submit a 500 word essay describing your Gold Award project. Explain why you chose the project you did and how it made an impact on you and your community.

Selection Process:
This application and your essay must be presented to your local American Legion Auxiliary Unit President ON OR BEFORE FEBRUARY 10, 2008.

Applications and essays will be judged by a screening committee composed of Girl Scout leaders and educators. The successful Applicant will be notified on or before June 15, 2008.

Tal Samsung - new

Samsung, a worldwide leader in electronics, endowed a scholarship fund of five million dollars to be administered by The American Legion. The endowment was made to show appreciation to U.S. veterans who came to the aid of Korea during its struggle against communist forces during the Korean War. “The Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program” established a series of scholarships derived from interest and other income from the $5,000,000 principal amount. In 2003, seven $20,000 scholarships and 91 $1,000 scholarships were awarded.

Eligibility:

High school juniors who participate in and complete either an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program and be a direct descendant, i.e. child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. or a legally adopted child, of a U.S. wartime veteran who served on active duty during one or more of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for membership in The American Legion by the United States government: WW I -- April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918; WW II -- December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946; Korean War -- June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955; Vietnam War -- February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975; Lebanon and Grenada -- August 24, 1982 - July 31, 1984; Panama -- December 20, 1989 - January 31, 1990 and Persian Gulf War -- August 2, 1990 to cessation of hostilities as determined by the United States government.

Scholarship:

The scholarship is for undergraduate study only and may be used for: tuition, books, fees, and room and board. The selection of the scholarship winners will be based, in part, upon the following criteria: academic record; involvement in school activities; involvement in community activities; community service; financial need and additional bonus points in the selection process will be awarded to descendants of U.S. veterans of the Korean War.

Grants to Study Abroad, Scholarships to Study a Language- Awarded by Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation 

Description

The Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation is dedicated to preserving the memory of Corinne Schillings, a 26- year-old woman who lost her life in the Baltimore Water Taxi accident on March 6, 2004. Corinne was a Silver Award Girl Scout and a 1999 graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Corinne received her undergraduate degree in foreign languages, majoring in Italian; she also studied Spanish, French, and Portuguese. She spent two semesters studying in Italy, first in Florence and then Milan. During her study abroad in Florence, Corinne met her future fiancé, Andrew Roccella, who also died in the accident. Corinne believed strongly in higher education for women and in learning about various cultures through language. The foundation will award scholarships and grants to deserving young women who reflect Corinne’s aspirations, values, and enthusiasm for life. www.cjsfoundation.org.

Criteria

Scholarship: The foundation will award scholarships to deserving young women who have earned the Girl Scout Gold or Silver Award and who plan to or are currently pursuing a college major or minor in foreign language. This scholarship is renewable.

Grant: The foundation will provide airfare for a Silver or Gold Award Girl Scout who plans to study abroad, regardless of her major/minor. It is not necessary to be a scholarship recipient to apply for this one-time grant; nor are scholarship recipients excluded from applying. This grant is not renewable.

Elks Announces 2007 Most Valuable Student Scholarships

Applications for the 2008 contest have to be submitted to your local Elks Lodge by January 11, 2008.

Applications for the Elks National Foundation's Most Valuable Student contest will be available beginning November 1 at your local Elks Lodge, online or by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to the Foundation. SASE application requests will be fulfilled through December 31. Applications for the contest have to be submitted to your local Elks Lodge by mid-January. The Elks National Foundation will award 500 four-year national scholarships for students pursuing a degree on a full-time basis.

The Elks National Foundation awards $2.216 million in college scholarships to a total of 500 high school seniors nationwide through its Most Valuable Student scholarship contest. 500 scholarships will be awarded; ranging from $ 4,000 to $60,000. Top prizes will be two $60,000 ($15,000 per year), two $40,000 ($10,000 per year), and two $20,000 ($5,000 per year) scholarships. 494 runners-up will receive $4,000 ($1,000 per year) scholarships awarded over a four-year period. (These Most Valuable Student Scholarships replace the Elks Gold Award Scholarships.)

High school seniors who are citizens of the United States are eligible to apply. (Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks.) College students are not eligible to apply. Males and females compete separately and judging is based on scholarship, leadership and financial need. Applicants must be citizens of the United States on the date their applications are signed; resident alien status does not qualify. Applicants will be judged on financial need, leadership and scholarship.

Girl Scout Gold Award Scholarships

The Foundation’s Gold Award scholarship program is for young women who have achieved the highest ranking in Girl Scouting – the Gold Award.

  • Eligibility- Girl Scout Gold Award winner and High School Senior.
  • Judging Criteria- Academics, activities, leadership, community involvement and pursuit of individual interests.
  • Awards- Eight $6,000 scholarships ($1,500 per year).
  • Applications and Deadlines- Contact Local Girl Scout Council.
  • Filing Deadline: Each council must submit its top application to GSUSA headquarters by May 1.

  • Has at least a 2.75 cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale for 9th and 10th grades.
  • Demonstrates accomplishments in community service and leadership and has faced a significant roadblock or challenge.

How many scholarships are available?

  • Up to 300 State scholarships of $2,500 each
  • Up to 10 National scholarships of $25,000 each

How may scholarships be used? Scholarships may be used for any type of post-high school education or training, certification, licensing, two or four year trade and technical education or a two or four year college degree.

Eastern Orthodox Scholarship

The Freeport, New York, based Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting offers a $1,000 scholarship as well as a $500 one to an Eagle Scout or Gold Award Girl Scout who is an active member of the Eastern Orthodox Church and has received the Alpha Omega Religious Award. They also offer one $1,000 scholarship for one Scout (male or female) who is of Russian descent and involved with his or her Greek Orthodox church.

State Farm Companies Fund

Selects 20 Hispanic college students annually to receive State Farm Hispanic Scholarship Foundation-sponsored scholarships of $2,500. Recipients are selected for academic accomplishment and demonstrated leadership skills.
