STUDIO2B
"We're not Brownies with longer
legs!!!"
Teens and preteens today
are concerned with their image and want to let go of anything
that seems "too young". Girl Scouts are often
seen as a "kid thing". The high dropout rate
of girls 11 and 12 sends a critical message from girls:
they need a whole new way of connecting with Girl Scouts
as they enter their pre-teen and teen years. Now think
STUDIO 2B.
The name STUDIO 2B was developed
through field testing hundreds of names with girls around
the country. The "Studio" in STUDIO 2B is a limitless
space that teens create for themselves to explore their
interest in. Girls need a place to go to become who they
want to be, take healthy risks, feel a sense of belonging
and friendship, speak out on what they believe in, and
make their mark on the world they are building around them.
STUDIO 2B recognizes and addresses the different physical,
emotional and social needs of girls at each of the three
stages of development. STUDIO 2B serves as an umbrella
name, linking together all girls who participate in Girl
Scouts. Girls are encouraged to rename their individual
groups to reflect their interests and attitudes.

Key Messages
- Become, Belong, Believe, Build-
Different Ages, Different Interests
Pre-teens (11-13), Teens (13-15), and Young
Adults (15-17)
Girls issues vary according to age. However, the four program goals are
meaningful to girls of all ages, and form the core of the program.
- Options, options, and more options
Girls today are joiners, with busy lives and many
opportunities to develop skills and pursue interests.
They are looking for ways to connect with and support
each other; ranging from web connections, high adventure
outings, health & fitness retreats, leadership
workshops, self-defense clinics, community action projects,
etc.
Girls can choose where they belong. Friends, birth dates, school grade
level, school district, skill level or interests can guide their choices.
Girls can be a part of 1 group, but decide on an activity with another
group. A girl could be a member of a traditional troop, but choose to
do activities from the Studio 2B materials. Girls may continue to earn
either the new or traditional recognitions. Allowing for differences
and flexibility is the key.
- Connecting with More adults
Teen savvy is an attitude, not an age! Girls
want adult advisors to be teen Savvy- to know what
teens are experiencing, to be responsible, and to be
fun. Connecting with many adults, each of whom is an "expert" in
a different area, is appealing.
- By Girls, For Girls
Girls want to be empowered, and to voice their opinions. They want adults
to listen to them. Girls want to have a safe environment to discuss
real-life issues that affect them. Even though girls want to be in
leadership roles, they recognize the value of a partnership with
adults.
- Comfortable and Safe Space
Girls want experiences that are different than
school, and they want a comfortable and safe space
to connect with other girls. They like being in all-girl
clubs and groups where they can more easily discuss
their problems, and don't have to worry about how they
look. Teen girls also want to learn how to deal with
their emotions and stress, and learn how to communicate
better with others.
- Have Fun
Girls like "decompressing together", sharing advice and "just
having fun".

The 4 B's help create the
essence of STUDIO 2B: a space where a girl has the freedom
to explore who she wants to be and what she wants to do.
- Become- Celebrate yourself
today and become your best self in the future.
Girls of all ages agree that becoming your true
self is important at any age. They are interested
in personalizing their space and developing their
image and sense of style.
- Belong- Be part of a group
where you have fun, relate to others with respect,
and develop lasting friendships. Girls want
a place to connect to other girls and adults,
where they can share what's on their minds and
trust that what they say will be kept confidential.
- Believe- Develop your
ideas and voice what's important to you. Girls
want to figure out what their values are and
need a safe place to express their ideas. They
often feel stressed by pressure from peers and
the media about how to look and act.
- Build- Take action on
what you care about and make a difference. Girls
feel pressure to achieve success and want to
have an impact on their communities and their
world.
