Learning Opportunities

Hiking Boots TripThe purpose of adult learning opportunities is to prepare volunteer adults to work with specific age-level girls within the Girl Scout Program, and to educate volunteer teams to coordinate Girl Scouting within their specific geographic area. Job training is provided for all Girl Scout adults for every position in the Council.

Training calendars are published twice a year with information about course availability. Included in the calendar are all classes during that season, dates, times and locations. Unless otherwise indicated, all training opportunities will be held at the Donald W. Reynolds Girl Scout Training and Service Center.

Adult Learning Opportunities are delivered by skilled volunteers and council staff who have been instructed in how to train adult learners effectively. Council reserves the right to change course content, course delivery, and training schedule as needed, based on the needs of our council volunteers. We will take every measure to ensure council volunteers are kept up to date on changes in our adult education program.

Volunteer Trainers Needed

Are you interested in expanding and sharing your volunteer experience? Would you like to help new Girl Scout Leaders become familiar with what Girl Scouting is all about and how to experience great girl/adult partnerships in Girl Scouting? If so... you might want to consider becoming a council trainer! Becoming a council trainer involves dedication and commitment. Training for Trainers is a series of classes that will be periodically held. For more information or to receive an application to become a council trainer, please contact Renee Cotrell at 385-3677, ext. 245.

Courses

The education of leaders covers all areas of program such as planning a meeting, sponsorships, parents meetings, troop committees, policies, standards and procedures, diversity and disability awareness, troop government, budgeting, recognition, and Girl Scout ceremonies and traditions.

Archery CourseSpecialty workshops and leadership conferences are offered to help experienced leaders keep abreast of the needs and interests of girls. Some of the topics include songs and games, campfire programs, night sky, and Girl Scout traditions.

Leaders are required by policy to take Girl Scout Orientation, Jump Start to Leadership, So You're Gonna Be a Leader, and Nitty Gritty/ Program Age Level.

Each troop must also have a certified First Aider/CPR adult. There are also courses for Moving Away From Your Meeting Place, Simple Overnights and Simple Camping. Most trainings are valid for 3 years.

Registration

Registration is required for all training opportunities.  Reservations can be made for all training courses by mailing in a registration card to the service center at least 2 weeks before the event. Reservations can also be made by calling Shannon Lawton at 385-3677, ext. 231, or by registering on-line, or by email to slawton@frontiercouncil.org (be sure to include name, address, zip, daytime phone, troop number and age level, service unit as well as class date, time and location.) Pre-registration is necessary so that volunteer instructors may order supplies and arrange facilities. Walk-ins place an additional burden on the volunteer instructors, and create an inconvenience for the participants who have followed the registration process. If classes do not have a minimum number of registered participants, they may be canceled. Those who have registered, will be notified of any change. If you need to change your registration, please call and cancel.

For some classes, or certain facilities, there may be a maximum number of students. Once the maximum enrollment number has been reached, you may be placed on a waiting list, and notified if space becomes available. Any participant who arrives later than 30 minutes after the start of a training, will not be given credit for having attended that training. For further information, please contact the service center at 385-3677.

Fees

Although costs are involved in all training opportunities, not all classes have a fee. There is a minimum charge for some classes to cover the cost of materials, food or operation of the class. These fees will be indicated in the course description, and must be paid at the time of registration. Please note that you are NOT registered until all required fees are paid. Telephone payments may be made with a debit card, Visa, Mastercard or Discover card by calling the front desk at the service center at 385-3677. Financial assistance is available. Contact  Renee Cotrell at 385-3677, ext. 245.

Fees are nonrefundable, unless the course is canceled by the council. With advance notice of 48 hours from participants, fees from canceled classes can be transferred one time only.  If you are a "no call, no show" for a class with a fee, you forfeit the money. Credit should be used within the current membership year. If another date is unavailable, the credit can be held on record for the next training calendar by request. If the credit is not used by the end of the next membership year, the credit is forfeited.

Cancellations

A course may be canceled or rescheduled by the council training department for many reasons. In the event a course is cancelled, re-scheduled, or moved to another location, those who have registered will be notified. Participants who are unable to attend the changed date or location will receive a refund, where fees are involved.

A course may be canceled if a minimum number of participants have not registered within 5 business days prior to the course date. If you are unable to attend the class which you have registered for, please cancel your registration by contacting Shannon Lawton at 385-3677, ext. 231, or Renee Cotrell, ext. 245, 48 hours before the scheduled training. This is to help the trainer know the number of participants to expect and other volunteers who wish to attend what otherwise appears to be a full course.

Minimum Registered Participants Required

All classes must have a minimum number of participants registered in order to take place; if not, the class will be canceled. Additionally, all classes have a maximum capacity, whether due to course design or space limitation at the training facility. These are the minimum number of participants required for each class:

So You're Gonna Be a Leader Six (6) Simple Overnight TBA
Nitty Gritty Six (6) Simple Camper TBA
First Aid & CPR Six (6) Specialty Workshops Ten (10)

Child Care

Children are NOT permitted at any training sessions or sites, nor is there child care provided, unless specifically noted on the training calendar. Please make childcare arrangements prior to attending class.
