What is Resident Camp?

The goal of Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada is for each camper to grow in appreciation and knowledge of herself, the Girl Scout program, the natural environment, and other people. Amarican Camping Association Link

Camp Foxtail is open to all girls ages 7-17 years. Camp Foxtail is managed by the Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada, and is accredited by the American Camping Association.

The Camp Foxtail property is managed by Girl Scouts of Southern Nevada and is accredited by the American Camp Association. Camp Foxtail has a licensed kitchen facility with a Class A rating from the Clark County Health Department, and drinking water is regularly tested and meets all regulation health and fire codes.

Foxtail program is designed so girls and staff form a temporary camping unit. The staff, site and facilities are furnished by the Council. Rules for acceptance and participation in the program are the same for every girl, regardless of race, religion or national origin. Every attempt will be made to accommodate girl with disabilities (a handicapped accessible bathroom has been installed), however, due to rocky terrain and 1950's construction, the overall camp is not wheelchair accessible. Additionally, the staff is not trained to handle severe emotional or psychiatric problems. Girls register for resident camp as individuals.

Camp Foxtail is located in the Toiyabe National Forest high above Las Vegas in the cool Spring Mountain Range. Girls aged 7-17 spend from 3-11 days among Aspen, Ponderosa and Foxtail Pine. The temperature at camp is cool in the early mornings and in the evenings, but can get up to 85 degrees during the day. Base camp is 8500' with the highest unit at 9000'.

Cabin at Camp FoxtailCampers live in 1 of 4 units which have either platform tents or cabins, flush toilets or latrines, washstands, shower houses and a fire circle. Counselors/staff live in a separate cabin or tent, central within the unit, but close enough to supervise campers.

Programs and activities at Camp Foxtail include hiking, nature studies, crafts, overnights away from camp, campfire singing, and a variety of special interest activities. These might include backpacking, art, earth conservation and leadership programs for older girls, to name a few. There is something for every girl at Camp Foxtail.

Campers will devote a portion of each day to their area of interest. The remainder of the day will be spent participating in general camp activities (i.e. hiking, crafts, cookouts, discovering nature). Please understand that it is our intention to guide and direct campers in the program activities listed for each session. However, because our philosophy of camping is one which allows for girl planning, we cannot guarantee the girls will choose what is suggested. We also cannot guarantee that every activity listed in the brochure will be done, girls may vote to do different activities, or the weather may interfere with planned activities.
