Community Scholarships

Girl Scout Achievement Award

AWARD: $1,000 Scholarship

Applicant Requirements:

  • Must have earned the Girl Scout Gold award and have at least Junior standing in High School.
  • Must be actively involved in a religious institution and must have received the appropriate religious emblem at the Girl Scout Cadette, Senior or Ambassador level.
  • Must have demonstrated practical citizenship in the religious institution, school, Girl Scouting, and community.
  • Must submit at least one letter of recommendation with application from an individual representing one of the following: your church, school, community, or Girl Scout troop.
  • Submit a 500 word essay describing your Gold Award project. Explain why you chose the project you did and how it made an impact on you and your community.

Selection Process:

This application and your essay must be presented to your local American Legion Auxiliary Unit President ON OR BEFORE APRIL 1, 2010.

Applications and essays will be judged by a screening committee composed of Girl Scout leaders and educators. The successful Applicant will be notified late JUNE of 2010.

Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting Scholarships

The Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting offers two scholarships. The recipient for first place will receive $1,000 and the runner up will receive $500 upon acceptance to a four year accredited college or university. The candidates are evaluated on their involvement in their church, school, community, scholastic achievements, and Scouting.

Eligibility requirements

* Be a registered active member of a Boy or Girl Scout unit.

* Have earned the Eagle Scout Award for boys or the Gold Award for girls.

* Be an active member of an Eastern Orthodox Church and must have received the Alpha Omega Religious Scout Award.

* Have demonstrated practical citizenship in their church, school, Scouting unit, and community.

* Be enrolled in an accredited high school, and in their final year.

* Submit four letters of recommendation with the application: one letter from leaders of each of the following groups: religious institution, school, community leader, and head of Scouting unit.

The Eastern Orthodox Committee on Scouting Scholarship Committee will award the three national scholarships to the recipients who best meet the qualifications and not on a need basis.

Applications can be obtained from E.O.C.S. Chairman, George N. Boulukos, 862 Guy Lombardo Avenue, Freeport, New York 11520 and they must be submitted by May 1st of each year.  The national winners will be announced in June of each year.

Rising Star Scholarships

Massachusetts Institute of Technology, The M.I.T. Sloan School of Management, Deloitte & Touche, ShillerMath and the Girl Scouts of the USA share a common agenda: For kids to learn and love math. Tal Samsung

Samsung, a worldwide leader in electronics, endowed a scholarship fund of five million dollars to be administered by The American Legion. The endowment was made to show appreciation to U.S. veterans who came to the aid of Korea during its struggle against communist forces during the Korean War. “The Samsung American Legion Scholarship Program” established a series of scholarships derived from interest and other income from the $5,000,000 principal amount. In 2003, seven $20,000 scholarships and 91 $1,000 scholarships were awarded.

Eligibility:

High school juniors who participate in and complete either an American Legion Boys State or American Legion Auxiliary Girls State Program and be a direct descendant, i.e. child, grandchild, great grandchild, etc. or a legally adopted child, of a U.S. wartime veteran who served on active duty during one or more of the periods of war officially designated as eligibility dates for membership in The American Legion by the United States government: WW I -- April 6, 1917 - November 11, 1918; WW II -- December 7, 1941 - December 31, 1946; Korean War -- June 25, 1950 - January 31, 1955; Vietnam War -- February 28, 1961 - May 7, 1975; Lebanon and Grenada -- August 24, 1982 - July 31, 1984; Panama -- December 20, 1989 - January 31, 1990 and Persian Gulf War -- August 2, 1990 to cessation of hostilities as determined by the United States government.

Scholarship:

The scholarship is for undergraduate study only and may be used for: tuition, books, fees, and room and board. The selection of the scholarship winners will be based, in part, upon the following criteria: academic record; involvement in school activities; involvement in community activities; community service; financial need and additional bonus points in the selection process will be awarded to descendants of U.S. veterans of the Korean War.

Grants to Study Abroad, Scholarships to Study a Language- Awarded by Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation 

Description

The Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation is dedicated to preserving the memory of Corinne Schillings, a 26- year-old woman who lost her life in the Baltimore Water Taxi accident on March 6, 2004. Corinne was a Silver Award Girl Scout and a 1999 graduate of Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. Corinne received her undergraduate degree in foreign languages, majoring in Italian; she also studied Spanish, French, and Portuguese. She spent two semesters studying in Italy, first in Florence and then Milan. During her study abroad in Florence, Corinne met her future fiancé, Andrew Roccella, who also died in the accident. Corinne believed strongly in higher education for women and in learning about various cultures through language. The foundation will award scholarships and grants to deserving young women who reflect Corinne’s aspirations, values, and enthusiasm for life. www.cjsfoundation.org.

Criteria

Scholarship: The foundation will award scholarships to deserving young women who have earned the Girl Scout Gold or Silver Award and who plan to or are currently pursuing a college major or minor in foreign language. This scholarship is renewable.

Grant: The foundation will provide airfare for a Silver or Gold Award Girl Scout who plans to study abroad, regardless of her major/minor. It is not necessary to be a scholarship recipient to apply for this one-time grant; nor are scholarship recipients excluded from applying. This grant is not renewable.
